When freshly cut the heartwood of purpleheart is a grayish brown. Upon exposure the wood becomes a rich purple color. With further age and exposure to UV light, the wood becomes a dark brown with a hint of purple. Grain is usually straight, but can also be wavy or irregular. Purpleheart is prized for use in fine inlay work especially on musical instruments, guitar fret boards, woodturning, cabinetry, flooring, and furniture.
